This was my third recording in the trilogy for Palmetto. In addition to the quintet I hired the great Steve Cardenas to play guitar. Some tunes were sextet, some were quintet, and others were quartet with guitar (both acoustic and electric). Dick Oatts played sax on this recording and was stunning throughout. This CD opens with a quote of the Monk tune “Crepescule with Nellie” and closes with a solo piano version of Monk’s “Gallop’s Gallop.” This, to me, book-ended the final CD in the trilogy perfectly, since my inspiration for composing and playing is so strongly linked to my love of Thelonious Monk’s music.
